马太福音导言

马太福音有 28 章。它从耶稣的家谱和出生记载开始，最后是关于他复活显现的报道。整本书贯穿了耶稣事工中的一些故事，包括他的受洗、受试探、呼召门徒、传道、讲道和医治，最后前往耶路撒冷，在那里他被罗马人出卖并处决。
马太福音是新约传统顺序中的第一本书。它当然不是第一本被写成最终被包含在新约中的书。它也不可能是第一本被写成的福音书。然而，俄利根引用早期教会传统称“......第一本是由马太写的”。（俄利根 - 教会史，6:15）它肯定是在公元 70 年耶路撒冷圣殿被毁之前写成的。
这部福音书的主题是基督作为犹太人的弥赛亚。作者马太是一位犹太税吏，后来成为耶稣的门徒。这是由马太本人讲述的。这部福音书充满了犹太元素。马太提供的家谱始于亚伯拉罕，并通过大卫王系追溯到耶稣的“继父”约瑟。这种谱系对于犹太人来说是至关重要的，它是继承权的证明，包括精神和物质上的继承权。上帝与大卫的约定承诺弥赛亚将来自大卫的直系血统，并将坐在以色列的宝座上。而耶稣在这部福音书中被反复称为“大卫的子孙”。
马太还强调了许多犹太习俗，却没有解释，因为犹太人会很容易理解这些传统。此外，马太将许多关于弥赛亚的旧约典故与耶稣在整个事工中所说的话和所做的事直接联系起来。特别是，马太侧重于区分法利赛人和撒都该人所描绘的摩西律法和摩西本人所描绘的摩西律法 - 道德律法优于礼仪律法。
