盐水的密度,作为比重,可以用比重计或安东帕尔等设计的密度计来测量。结果测量值(通常是比重,但一些比重计测量波美度)将与水中总溶解盐的质量直接相关。如果水中存在大量极细的悬浮颗粒,则该方法可能会失效 - 它们将包含在密度测量中。在野外,可以通过仅测量清水样品、将样品放入高筒中沉降或过滤样品来避免这种情况。虽然这种方法提供了有关溶解盐质量的信息,但它没有提供有关盐的成分或电导率的信息。
与大多数其他方法相比,使用比重计具有便宜的优势。比重计由制造商校准,并且由于它们只是加重的玻璃,因此它们清楚地显示出任何校准不足(它们会断裂)。比重计的易碎性可能被认为是野外研究的缺点,但如果它们装在比重计盒中,它们相当坚固。
比重计有几个范围,结果的精度取决于比重计的范围。对于盐湖研究,三套比重计可以方便地涵盖整个比重范围,从淡水(比重 1.000)到普通盐的结晶点(比重 1.218),一直到泻盐的大致沉淀范围(比重 1.300)。
比重计读数需要根据温度进行校正,因为较暖的水会膨胀并变得密度更低。
密度计价格昂贵,但有测量极精细分辨率的版本。这些机器中使用的细玻璃毛细管 U 形管如果暴露在过高的热量下可能会断裂。这种情况可能发生在沙漠条件下在汽车中携带这些物品时。

无论比重计是读取波美度、白利糖度、比重还是其他测量值,其使用方法都是相同的。这里的说明适用于比重 (SG) 比重计。如果您使用其他类型的比重计,则可以使用表格将读数转换为 SG 或 TDS (g/L 或 g/kg)。
- 用盐水样品将量筒装满到溢出点
- 将比重计漂浮在盐水样品中
- 读取并记录比重计轴上的密度水平到水位
- 将温度计插入盐水样品中
- 读取并记录样品的温度
- 根据样品的温度添加或减去密度度数(见下面的温度校正)
- 在实验室日记中记录校正后的读数
- 如果比重计要么沉到底部,要么漂浮过高而无法进行读数,则说明您使用的是错误的比重计。选择一个范围不同的比重计。
- 所有比重计读数都必须从读取时的温度校正到比重计的设计温度。大多数比重计在 15.6 oC (60oF) 下校准。一些盐场使用在 20oC 下校准的比重计。校准温度在比重计轴上注明。使用前检查任何比重计!
- 始终记录未校正的读数和温度,以及校正后的读数。如果出现误算,除非原始数据可用,否则无法校正“校正”后的读数!
