Writing Adolescent Fiction/Character names/Korean
Usage Note
[edit | edit source]In Korea, last names come first. A Korean with a hyphenated name would be known by both parts of the name, not just the one before the hyphen. A girl would call her older brother Oppa and her older sister Unnie. A boy would call his older brother Hyung and his older sister Noona.

Surnames
[edit | edit source]In instances where two surnames are identical except that one begins with N and the other with R, the R version is North Korean only, but the N version can be either North or South Korean. There are also different spellings for different surnames. No can be Noh, Park can be Bak, Lee can be Yi. This is in both North and South Korea. Also keep in mind surnames can start with one letter but that can be changed. Bang can be Pang or Kim can be Gim, Cheong can be Jung. Lim is a North Korean and South Korean Surname.
